Questions & Answers

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Garage Butler.

Q. Will the Garage Butler work on all garage door systems?
A. Most likely yes. If your garage closer/opener has a working button that the Garage Butler can attach itself to then yes.

Q. Will the Garage Butler work with all the safety features that are connected to my opener/closer?
A. Yes, the Garage Butler works with all security features.

Q. Should I install the Garage Butler if my opener/closer does not have any type of security/ auto-reverse mechanisms installed?
A. The Garage Butler will work even if your garage door does not have any security/auto-reverse mechanisms installed, however we suggest that you first install some type of security devices first. We will not be held responsible if injury or damage occurs.

Q. Should I install the Garage Butler with the contacts towards the top or the bottom of the track?
A. It really depends on the length of your garage and personal preference. The Garage Butler can be installed with the contacts towards the bottom OR towards the top of the track. It is up to you. Most people install the contacts toward the bottom and then run the wire along the edge of the floor along the wall, using either staples, tacks or some other type of devices for a cleaner looking installation.

Q. My unit just keeps opening and closing the door, it also does not matter if I have it set for 3, 10, 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, It goes off in 3 minutes if I set it to hold, it stays there even if I hit the hold button again.
A. The problem is that the magnet is not close enough to the magnetic switch. Check the aluminum bracket and physically bend it so that the gap is approximately 1/8" The other problem of beeping every three minutes regardless of setting will go away when the first problem is corrected.

Q.  If the Garage Butler starts to close my garage THEN something makes the security reverse-mechanism kick in and the garage door goes back up... will the garage butlers timer re-start and then attempt to close the garage door again after 3, 10, 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes?
A. Yes. It there is an obstruction that made the garage door go back up after the Garage Butler started to close it after the selected time, the Garage Butlers timer will automatically re-start and attempt to re-close the garage door again. With our new model that has 6 time settings, the unit will wait :60 seconds and then re-attempt to close the garage door instead of waiting the full 3, 10, 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes.

Q. How loud is the 30 second siren?
A. The 30 second siren beeps about every second. It is loud enough to hear from across the street.

Q. How dark does it have to be for the light sensor to work?
A. This is a pretty hard question to answer, but for the most part it needs to be fairly dark in the garage for the Garage Butlers light sensor mechanism to kick in and close the garage door. If you press the hold button and the unit continues to beep, most likely it is to dark in your garage and the light sensor is doing it's job.

Q. What if I want the garage door left open at night and I want my lights off in the garage?
A. Open your garage door, and then turn the Garage Butler to the OFF position.

Q. What if I need a longer wire for one or more of the wires that the Garage Butler comes with?
A. You can simply purchase some copper speaker wire from any hardware store or Radio Shack and cut and twist the wires together to lengthen them.

Q. I pressed the hold button but the Garage Butler status light does not go solid and it starts to beep alerting me that it is about to close the garage door.
A. Most likely it is just a little bit to dark in your garage and the Garage Butler assumes that it is nighttime. To verify this simply turn on more lights in your garage OR simply shine a flashlight on the light sensor and you will see that your garage door will remain open. Once you take away the light source, it should once again beep and then close the garage door.

Q. Can I hook up TWO garage door openers/closers to the Garage Butler?
A. No. The Garage Butler is designed to work on only ONE garage door opener/closer motor/button.
